VW Transporter heater & blower repair
Cold van, misted windows and a fan that will not play. Heater faults are miserable in winter and they are almost always one of four things. We can usually pin it down quickly and we normally have a good used motor here.
- Family-run since 2020
- T5, T5.1 and T6
- Used parts on the shelf

What it usually looks like
Which part has failed is easier to narrow down than most people expect.
Fan only works on full
The classic. Speeds one to three do nothing, four works fine. That is the resistor pack almost every time, and it is an inexpensive fix.
No fan at all
Nothing on any speed. Either the blower motor itself has died, or a fuse or the switch has gone. Worth checking before you condemn the motor.
Blowing cold when it should be hot
Coolant not reaching the matrix, a stuck thermostat, air in the system or a blend flap that has stopped moving.
Squealing or rumbling from the dash
Bearings going in the blower motor. It will get louder and then stop working entirely.
Misting up and a sweet smell
Often a leaking heater matrix putting coolant vapour through the vents. Get it seen, you are losing coolant into the cabin.
Hot one side, cold the other
Blend flap or actuator fault on climate control vans.
How we sort it
Diagnose before we strip
A blower motor is a quick job. A heater matrix means the dash coming out. We check the cheap causes first so nobody strips a dash for a twenty pound resistor.
Motors and resistor packs
We carry used blower motors from the vans we break and fit new resistor packs. Most heater jobs are done the same day.
Matrix, thermostat and coolant faults
If it is running cold because of the cooling system rather than the heater, we will say so and quote that instead. See our cooling system work for what that involves.
Heater and blower, questions and answers
My fan only works on speed 4. What is it?
Nine times out of ten that is the resistor pack, and it is one of the cheaper jobs on the van. Message us and we will confirm before you book in.
Do you have used heater motors in stock?
Usually, yes. We break T5, T5.1 and T6 vans ourselves, so heater motors, resistor packs and blower housings are regularly on the shelf. We can post one out if you would rather fit it yourself.
How long does a heater matrix take?
It is a big job because the dash has to come out, so it is normally a full day or more. We will always check it really is the matrix first.
